College Prep: More than Just Dorm Décor

If college is on the horizon for you or someone in your family, that means campus visits, entrance exams and navigation of the application process. Here are some quick tips regarding these exciting, albeit potentially overwhelming, tasks.

Campus visits:

  • Plan to visit before applications are due so you can narrow your choices.
  • Go when classes are in session so you get a true feel for the school.
  • The spring of junior year is an idea time to visit.

Entrance exams:
Admission requirements vary by college, so research your prospective schools to learn their particular requirements.

  • PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test): Intended to help students prepare for the SAT. Take it during your junior year.
  • SAT Reasoning Test: Includes a 70-minute critical reading section, a 70-minute math section and a 60-minute writing section. Take it during the spring of your junior year and/or fall or senior year.
  • SAT Subject Tests: Intended to showcase achievement in specific subject areas. Take it once you’ve completed relevant high school courses.
  • ACT: Consists of subject areas in English, math, reading and science, as well as a 30-minute writing test. Take it during the spring of your junior year and/or fall or senior year.

The application process:

  • Use a planning calendar to track deadlines, including test dates and registration deadlines.
  • Establish your own deadlines in advance of the schools’ deadlines that allow you plenty of time to complete and submit all of the required documents.
  • Make sure these required documents—including transcripts, essays and letters of recommendation—work together to form a cohesive picture of who you are.
